Rice paper does something glass cannot: it diffuses light through the material itself, so the whole surface of the shade becomes the light source and there is no bright point anywhere on it. The Kiyomi Japandi Wabi Sabi Rice Paper Table Lamp sets that shade on a slim iron stand, and the result is a lamp that lights a corner without ever being harsh to look at directly, which is why this shape has stayed in Japanese interiors for as long as it has.
The construction is deliberately spare: an iron base for weight and stability, a rice paper body for the light. There is no shade to angle, no arm to adjust and nothing to program. It covers a small area, roughly the scale of a bedside corner, a reading nook or a desk end, rather than a whole room, and it is best used as one of several light sources in a space rather than the only one.
Eight paper colors are offered: white, gray, black, soft yellow, yellow, orange, red and green. White and gray are the most neutral and read closest to a traditional Japanese lantern. Black is the most graphic, going dark and solid when unlit. The colored papers tint the light itself, which is the reason to choose one, since a red or orange shade pushes the whole corner warm.
