The Lucerna Retro Dimmable Ambient Cordless Table Lamp takes a domed shade, the kind that has been on desks since the middle of the last century, and removes the one thing that always tied it to a spot on the table. There is no cable. That single change turns a fixed desk lamp into something you carry: to the bedside, onto a windowsill, back again. Tap the lamp to switch it on, tap again to step the brightness.
The body is iron with a metallic finish, which gives it the weight to sit steadily on a table, and gives the dome the crisp reflective edge that makes the shape read properly. It charges over USB and gives up to fifteen hours of use on a charge, which comfortably covers an evening and then some, so it does not need to be planned around.
Five finishes are offered: silver, rose gold, gold, midnight black and frost glow. Silver and midnight black are the coolest and most graphic; gold and rose gold are the warmer pair and pick up brass hardware and timber; frost glow is the softest of the five and diffuses more of the light through the shade itself. Lucerna suits bedsides, desks and dining tables, and it is the right lamp for a table where a cable would only be in the way.
