Closed it is a book. Opened, the pages fan out and light from between them, and the further it opens the more the light spreads. At a full 360 degrees the covers meet and it becomes a cylinder that throws light evenly in every direction, which is a different lamp from the same object. It is the kind of object people pick up without being invited to.
Three light modes cover different jobs: warm for evening ambience, cool for working, natural for reading without the yellow cast warm light gives a page. The battery runs up to eight hours and recharges over USB with the cable included, so it works on a bedside table with no outlet nearby, on a balcony, or in a tent. Nothing has to be plugged in while it is being used.
Three sizes, from 3.9 by 3.1 inches (10 by 8 cm) up to 8.7 by 6.7 inches (22 by 17 cm), all 1 inch (2.5 cm) thick when closed, which means even the large one slides into a bag flat.
