Two things happen at once with the Flow Dimmable Ambient Moody Sand Motion Table Lamp, and that is the whole idea. Turn the disc and fine sand begins to fall through the glass in slow, shifting drifts; behind it, a soft light source lifts the whole face of the lamp. You end up watching it, which is not something most lamps ask of you. It works as a light and as something to look at, and it holds attention the way moving water does.
The body is metal with lead-free glass, and the movement is entirely manual. There is no motor and nothing to program. You rotate the circle when you want it running, and it settles on its own. The light is dimmable across three colors, warm white, neutral white and cool white, so the same lamp can sit low and amber on a side table at night or read clean and bright on a shelf during the day.
Four finishes are offered, red, blue, black and green, and the choice changes the character more than you might expect, since the frame colors the light spilling around the glass.
