An octopus carved in wood with tentacle-shaped slots running off the body, each one holding a different part of a spread. Cheeses, cured meats, fruit, crackers and tapas sit in their own sections rather than sliding into one another, so the board looks arranged without anyone having to arrange it. The shape does the work a plain rectangle cannot, which is to make a spread look composed before anything is placed on it.
At roughly 10 by 10 inches it is sized for real entertaining rather than a token few bites, and it works as the center of a table for four to six people. Carved from recycled, sustainably sourced wood with a hand-polished rustic finish, each board carries its own grain, so no two come out identical.
Wood wants hand washing rather than a dishwasher, and a light food-safe oil now and then keeps the grain from drying out and the finish from going gray. Treated that way it lasts for years.
