A ribbed surface changes what a wall light does to a wall. The Ondra Minimalist Resin Up and Down Ribbed Wall Sconce is molded with a fluted texture that catches light along every ridge, so the fixture reads as a piece of relief rather than a flat block, and it holds visual interest even during the day when it is switched off. Lit, the ribbing throws a fine pattern of light and shadow that a smooth fixture cannot produce.
The light is directed both upward and downward rather than out into the room, which is what makes this a wall wash rather than a lamp. Two soft columns of light run up and down the wall from the fixture, meeting the ceiling and the floor, and the effect is closer to architectural lighting than to a reading light. It is best used to shape a room rather than to light a task within it.
The body is resin, which is what allows the fluted form to be this crisp and the piece to stay light on the wall. Four colors are offered: white, gray, brown and green. White and gray are the most recessive and nearly disappear into a pale wall until lit. Brown is the warmest and sits with timber and leather. Green is the most decorative and works where there is already a palette to answer to. Ondra suits bedrooms, living rooms, hallways and accent walls.
