The Calder Sculptural Matte Travertine Ceiling Light is built around a genuine stone element paired with warm wood, and travertine is porous and naturally pitted, so every fixture carries a different pattern of veining and small open pores across its surface. No two are the same, and none of them look manufactured, which is the entire reason to choose stone over a molded shade.
Light passes across the stone rather than straight through it, which produces a low, ambient glow instead of a bright working light. That makes Calder a poor choice as the only light in a kitchen and an excellent one in a bedroom, an entryway or a living room where you want the ceiling to feel warm rather than lit. The wood element softens the stone further and keeps the whole fixture from reading as cold.
Two sizes are offered, at 11.8 and 16.9 inches, both sitting close to the ceiling and keeping headroom intact. Use the smaller in an entryway, a landing or a compact bedroom, and the larger where the ceiling is broad enough to carry it without crowding. Hardwired installation onto a standard junction box.
