The Alder Adjustable Sculptural Wooden Desk Lamp puts light where the work is. A wooden arm tilts and swings so the head can be brought down over a page, angled onto a keyboard or turned up to bounce light off the wall once the work is finished for the day. It is a working lamp first, but the timber and the soft painted head keep it from looking like office equipment.
Five finishes are offered. White and black are the easiest on a desk that already carries a monitor and a stand. Green and pink suit rooms where the desk is also furniture, a bedroom corner or a shared study. Yellow is the brightest of the five. All of them use the same wooden arm, so the difference between them is only in the head and the base.
The light is warm rather than clinical, which suits a lamp that stays on into the evening, and the head is deep enough to keep the source out of view when the lamp is angled low. It takes a standard bulb and switches on the cord, so the warmth and output are set by the bulb you fit. It plugs into a standard outlet and needs no assembly beyond fitting the shade. Keep the cable clear of the desk edge if the lamp is going into a child's study.
