Installation guide
Before you start. Vesta connects directly to household wiring, so it must be installed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code and all applicable local codes. Supply is 120 V AC, 60 Hz. The light is sized for a single wall box with fixing screws at 60 mm (2-3/8") centers, the international 86-type or UK/European single box. A standard US single-gang device box places its screws 3-9/32" apart, so the fixing points do not line up and the 3.39" plate does not fully cover its opening. A UK/European-standard single flush box, 35 mm (1-3/8") deep or more, is the recommended box in the US. Indoor dry locations only.
- Isolate the circuit. Switch off the supply at the panel and confirm it is dead before touching any conductor.
- Set the box. Install the 60 mm-center single box flush with the finished wall, typically 6 to 12 in (15 to 30 cm) above the tread or floor, with the fixing lugs top and bottom.
- Bring in the supply. Run a constant (unswitched) 120 V feed into the box. The sensor handles on and off, so no wall switch or dimmer is needed ahead of it.
- Connect. Land the line (hot, black) conductor on the L terminal and the neutral (white) on the N terminal of the terminal block on the rear body. The fitting has no ground terminal; the equipment grounding conductor is terminated in the box as the code requires.
- Fix the light. Fold the conductors back into the box, seat the rear body in the opening and fix the plate with the two supplied screws through the slotted holes. Do not overtighten.
- Test. Restore power and allow about 30 seconds for the sensor to settle. Test in a darkened space: the light comes on on approach and goes out roughly 30 seconds after the area is clear.
How the sensor behaves. A daylight sensor keeps Vesta off in a well-lit space. After dark, the motion sensor picks up movement about 10 ft (3 m) in front of the plate. Keep the lens clear of paint and plaster, and mount it with a clear view along the stair or hallway, away from heat vents and direct sun.
The Vesta Ambient LED Motion Step Light exists for the walk made in the dark without turning on a main light. A motion sensor behind the faceplate brings it on on approach and lets it go out again about 30 seconds after the last movement, so a stair, a hallway or the route from a bed to a door stays lit only as long as it is needed. A daylight sensor keeps it off while the space is already bright, so it never runs during the day.
The light is a soft 3000 K warm white from an integrated 2 W LED, directed down and out through the opening in the plate. It is bright enough to show a step edge and low enough that it does not wake anyone or spoil night vision on the way back to bed. The sensor reaches about 10 feet, which covers the width of most hallways and a short run of stairs. The output is fixed, so it runs from a standard circuit rather than a dimmer.
Four finishes are offered: black, white, silver and gold. Sensor A places a round sensor lens centered above the light opening; Sensor B sets the lens slightly off center beside a small daylight sensor. Black, white and silver come in both, while gold comes with Sensor B only. The 3.4 inch square plate is sized to the international 86-type single wall box, which has a different screw spacing from a standard US single-gang box, so the right box is worth planning with an electrician before installation. Vesta suits stairs, hallways, entryways and bedrooms, and it is designed to be repeated, with a run spaced evenly along one side of a staircase.
