Installation guide (about 15 minutes)
Pick the hanging point first. One fixing carries the whole piece, so it wants a porch beam, a ceiling joist, a solid door lintel, a curtain rod across a recess or a sturdy tree branch. The assembly is light, but adhesive hooks lose grip in damp and wind, so a screw eye or a proper hook is the better outdoor choice. Leave room for it to swing without hitting a wall, a railing or a doorway.
- Unbox and let it hang. Suspend it somewhere convenient for an hour so the packing creases drop out of the fabric. A little steam speeds that up.
- Fit the batteries and test the lights first. Two AA cells. Do this on the ground, not from a ladder, and check both the ghost and the fairy string on the ropes come on.
- Fix the hanging point. Indoors or on a porch, drive a screw eye or ceiling hook into a beam or joist. Over a branch, loop the ropes across and secure them so they cannot slide along it.
- Hang both ropes together so the seat sits level. A tilted seat is the first thing anyone notices.
- Set the drop. The total drop adjusts from 59" to 118". Set it so the bottom of the assembly hangs clear of the ground and clear of anything it can swing into.
- Arrange it. Fan the maple vines evenly down both ropes so the fairy lights are spread rather than bunched, and settle the ghost's fabric and arms into the shape you want.
- Position the battery box where rain cannot sit on it, tucked behind the figure rather than exposed on top.
Taking it down. Unhook it, remove the batteries, and store it hanging or loosely folded rather than compressed, so the fabric keeps its shape for next year.
