How to put them up
Test one first. Stick a single bat somewhere inconspicuous and leave it a day before committing to a wall. Foam adhesive behaves differently on different paints, and that one test saves a repainting job.
- Clean and dry the surface. Dust is the main reason these fall down. Wipe it and let it dry fully.
- Fold along the scored grooves to create the 3D effect. Fold gently and only on the score line — forcing a wing is what cracks it, and the plastic gets brittle when cold. Vary the angle from bat to bat so the flock does not look uniform.
- Stick a foam pad to the center body on the back, not to the wings. That is what lets the wings stand proud of the wall and cast a shadow.
- Place the LED accents behind the larger bats. The light washes onto the wall around the body, so the bigger the bat, the more glow it throws. Spread the lit ones through the flock rather than grouping them.
- Press firmly on the body for several seconds. Do not press the wings flat.
Arranging a flock. Cluster them densely at one corner and thin them out as they fly away, which reads as movement rather than decoration. Put the largest bats at the dense end and the smallest at the trailing end for false perspective. A 12-pack dresses one window or a door, 36 makes a feature wall, and 48 to 60 covers a full wall or lets the flock run from wall onto ceiling.
Taking them down. Peel slowly, at a low angle to the wall rather than straight out. The bats come off reusable; the pads generally do not.
Surfaces, reuse and common questions
| Are all the bats lit? | No, and they are not meant to be. The LEDs are separate accents placed behind the bats you want to pick out. Check the packaging for the light count. Lighting a scattered selection looks better than lighting every bat anyway. |
| They keep falling off | The surface was dusty, textured or porous, or the pad was pressed onto a wing instead of the body. Foam pads need smooth and non-porous. They will not hold on chalky or dusty walls, textured or orange-peel drywall, brick, stucco or bare plaster. |
| Will they pull my paint off? | They are designed to peel away cleanly from smooth sealed surfaces, but paint and wallpaper vary far too much to promise it. Test one first. Not recommended on wallpaper, textured walls, or paint that has been down less than three to four weeks. Glass and mirrors are the safest surfaces of all. |
| Can they go outside? | Only somewhere covered. Foam adhesive loses grip in damp, frost and direct sun. A porch ceiling, a sheltered entryway or the inside of a window all work. A fully exposed wall or fence does not. Inside a window facing the street is the best of both. |
| Are they reusable? | The bats are, for years. Store them flat in a dry place rather than creased in a bag. Expect to replace the foam pads each season. Any small double-sided foam mounting square does the job. |
These bats ship flat and take their shape in the hand. Fold the wings along the scored lines and each one sits off the wall at an angle, throwing a shadow instead of lying flush like a paper cutout. Worked across a stair wall or a window in a loose scatter, a set reads as a colony caught mid flight rather than a row of stickers.
Pack size decides the effect. Twelve dresses a single window or a door frame. Thirty-six fills a feature wall with room to vary the spacing, which is what keeps the arrangement from looking like a grid. Forty-eight and sixty are for whole-room treatment, running bats up a staircase, across a ceiling line and out onto a covered porch in one continuous sweep.
The LED accents are what make it work after dark. They sit behind the bats and wash purple, red and blue onto the wall around them, so the lit bats read as silhouettes against color while the rest stay flat black. Lighting a scattered handful rather than every bat gives the flock depth. Sizes come assorted, the bats themselves are reusable for years and go back in the box flat, and the foam pads are worth replacing each season.
