Double-sided is the feature worth paying for. Both faces of the mat are finished and usable, so when one side picks up a mark during a meal it can be flipped rather than taken away to be cleaned. The cowhide texture reads as leather at the table without the cost or the care a real hide would demand. They suit a household that eats at the table daily rather than one setting up for guests.
Two millimeters of double-layer PU gives it enough body to lie flat on a table instead of curling at the corners, and enough insulation to take a hot dish without marking the surface underneath. Waterproof and oilproof, so a spill wipes off with a damp cloth or rinses under a faucet rather than soaking in.
At 17.5 by 11.8 inches (44.5 by 30 cm) they fit a standard dinner setting with room for a plate, glass and cutlery, and they work on a coffee table as well as a dining table. Sets of four or six are available in seven colors, from Dark Coffee, Brown and Black for formal settings through Light Coffee and Gray for neutral rooms to Green and Blue where the table can take a color. Non-slip backing keeps them in place when a plate is pushed across them.
